Community Day kicks off academic year

Students, faculty, and families joined together for  fun Saturday

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School celebrated Community Day on Saturday, August 25, to kickstart the 2018-2019 academic year.

All three divisions took part in a variety of activities that morning, culminating with food, fun, and a soccer game on the athletic fields.

At the Upper School, students and faculty spent the morning discussing their summer reading Choice Book selections. Faculty and staff members across campus chose books at the end of last year, and these were added as summer reading selections for Upper Schoolers. Some of the titles for this year’s discussions included: “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom, “We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart, “Foundation” by Isaac Asimov, and “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

After a lively morning of discussion, Upper School students and faculty took part in a community viewing of the award-winning film Maineland. Maineland follows the story of two international teenagers as they settle into a boarding school in blue-collar rural Maine, very similar to the Rabun Gap international boarding student experience. Advisory groups met to discuss the film.

The Middle School held its annual House Marathon at Indian Lake for Community Day. Students in grades 6-8 ran a course around the lake, developing teamwork, camaraderie, and spirit. Click here to read more about the Middle School marathon.

Lower School students were busy learning about flowers and bees in anticipation for the Honey Extraction, exercising their logic and problem solving skills while playing strategy games, building marble runs and much more.

The day capped off at the athletic fields as families, students, and faculty came together for a picnic lunch, inflatable games, and to support the Eagles soccer team as they took on Christ School. The varsity Eagles defeated Christ School 3-0, a fitting end to an exciting Saturday at Rabun Gap.
