The 2018-2019 Prefects assembled for a three-day Leadership Retreat this past weekend, August 10-12. The group, made up of 33 seniors from around the world, participated in several various learning opportunities, as well as team building exercises, over the course of the weekend.

They had the opportunity to present about their various dorms and were then able to hear from Rabun Gap’s Archivist, Mr. David Grist, with an in-depth history of the school. Mr. Jason Noffsinger, Assistant Dean of Students, and Ms. June Beale, Assistant Head of School for Student Life and Dean of Students, stayed with the prefects at Camp Dixie, an overnight camp close to the school. While embracing the cell and wifi-free location, they learned about prefect expectations, school changes and case studies. They were able to role play various difficult leadership scenarios that may occur over the course of the school year. They were trained in CPR and each earned a CPR certification. The prefects were also challenged to come up with goals for the upcoming year and displayed a tenacity to achieve them. The weekend wasn’t all work, though. The prefects were able to visit Clayton First United Methodist for church on Sunday and decompress at Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton.

Mr. Noffsinger said, “The group has formed a great understanding of their role and they are eager for all the students to be here.  They have great goals and a phenomenal amount of energy to get it done. Welcome 2018 - 19 prefect body!”
Prefects assume a major responsibility in the life of Rabun Gap by helping to maintain the quality of life for both boarding and day students. Modeling an attitude of mutual trust, openness, fairness, empathy, and cooperation, prefects share with faculty members specific management duties in dorms and other campus facilities.
