Rabun Gap expands afterschool lessons and classes

The Studio at Rabun Gap and The Academy Athletics to offer cirque, martial arts, athletic classes to the public
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School will now offer lessons and classes open to the public in cirque, tumbling, martial arts, golf, tennis, swimming, and more.

The new classes are in addition to dance and music instruction offered by The Studio at Rabun Gap, the premiere performing and fine arts studio for students in Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina. Cirque, martial arts, and tumbling will be under The Studio at Rabun Gap. New this year, the School has opened The Academy Athletics for sport-specific lessons, with the potential for league play. The Studio and The Academy Athletics classes are typically held in the afternoons and on Saturdays.

“It’s an exciting time for our extracurricular programs at Rabun Gap,” said Terri Manoogian, director of The Studio and The Academy Athletics. “Our classes are open to the community, and we encourage parents in the Northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina area to explore our offerings.”

The Studio’s cirque program will be led by professional instructor Waverly Jones of Asheville Aerials out of Asheville, North Carolina. Jones has an extensive background in the aerial arts,  with experience in aerial silks, and moved on to study aerial hoop, Spanish web, doubles trapeze, and pole arts. She has traveled across the globe to learn, teach, and perform various aerial and pole arts.

“Cirque is a great activity for students for so many reasons,” Jones said. “It helps young folks exercise how to support their peers through positive encouragement, it can be good for building confidence, positive self-esteem and body image, helps aid with many internal and external fears of failing, and provides the body with a good workout. Learning cirque also encourages artistic self-exploration through creative movement, and allows students to work together as a team when learning new skills.”

During the fall season, The Academy Athletics will offer 6-week Saturday sessions in junior golf for ages 4-10 and tennis for ages 10-18. The golf sessions will be held at Sky Valley Country Club. Tennis and swimming lessons will be held on Rabun Gap’s campus.

Online registration for classes is open at www.rabungap.org/studio for dance, music, tumbling, cirque, and martial arts classes, and www.rabungap.org/academyathletics for athletic lessons.

There will be an in-person registration day from 2-7 p.m. on Friday, August 17 at the Arts & Technology Building at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.

“We’re thrilled to share our facilities with the community and draw from the expertise of area instructors through The Studio and The Academy Athletics,” said Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro. “This is a unique and valuable opportunity for local children, as well as Rabun Gap students, to expand their horizons through extracurricular activities.”
