The Inclusion Initiative Club core group traveled to Morganton, N.C. for the second year in a row to workshop different leadership techniques and facilitation styles for having dialogue around diversity issues. Director of Equity and Inclusion Mirna Valerio led the group along with Spanish teacher Edgar Zavala, and Upper School Humanities teacher Kim Buice.

At the retreat, students had the opportunity to discuss issues about about culture, race, religion, gender and sexual identity. All the students were able to tell their personal experiences and how it shaped them as individuals. Rabun Gap believes that every student is unique and has their own understanding of what equity and inclusion means. The only way to fully explore these concepts is by getting together and having dialogue.

“I feel that these type of retreats are crucial and necessary for our students, especially when we live in a very diverse community with students coming many different countries and social backgrounds. Our students must be exposed to the various social issues happening around us on a regular basis. As diverse community we must ought to give our students as well as faculty the opportunity to explore, understand and question these concepts." Mr. Zavala said.
