Oscar McMullen '18 named Regional STAR Student

Oscar chose Dr. Marion Truslow as this year's STAR Teacher.
Oscar McMullen has been named Regional STAR Student, competing against seniors from 14 counties in Northeast Georgia.

McMullen was also named  Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School’s STAR Student for the Class of 2018, and he chose Dr. Marion Truslow as STAR Teacher. They were honored March 21 during the Region 2 awards presentation.

The Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program, organized by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, honors the state’s top-achieving seniors and their inspirational teachers. To secure the STAR nomination,  high school seniors must have the highest score of the SAT taken and be in the top-10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on GPA. Rabun Gap’s region includes high schools in Dawson, Fannin, Gainesville, Gilmer, Habersham, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, White, and Hall counties, as well as Mountain Education.

“We’re so proud of Oscar for not only securing the STAR Student honor at Rabun Gap, but also for topping the region,” said Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro. “This is a great achievement for Oscar and a testament to his hard work in the classroom.”

In addition to his academic success, McMullen, of Highlands, North Carolina, is very active on Rabun Gap’s campus, participating in track, theatre, and soccer. He’s also a prefect and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. His favorite subject is math.

“I love problem solving and math is an opportunity to learn and grow in that aspect,” McMullen said.

Dr. Truslow, known as “Doc” by students and faculty, has been teaching at Rabun Gap since 1999. He is a member of the humanities department and teaches a variety of Advanced Placement history courses.

“I picked Doc as the STAR teacher because his class made a profound impact on me and my work ethic, as well as his encouragement in my life outside of school,” McMullen said.

“Oscar loves ideas and that passion allows him to absorb, retain, and apply vast amounts of material from a college level class taught in a high school setting.  He is an exceptional student and one of the most exceptional that I have taught in decades of college and high school teaching in New York, Baltimore, Charlottesville, Nashville, and Atlanta,” said Dr. Truslow. “ I expect to see his name on scholarly journal articles in the very near future.”

Oscar intends to study engineering after graduating from Rabun Gap and hopes to make a positive change in the world using his education.
