French classes cook up finals

Upper School classes host cooking shows at local Teaching Kitchen
Mme. Anne Shook’s classes traded pencils for whisks to take their final trimester exam before Spring Break. Students enjoyed a hands-on learning experience hosting their own French cooking shows at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia’s Teaching Kitchen in Clayton, showcasing their skills in conversational French.

Instead of a traditional trimester exam, Mme. Shook emphasized experiential learning and fun at the Teaching Kitchen. Student groups chose a French recipe to create at the Teaching Kitchen, and hosted a cooking show to explain the steps to the recipe entirely in French. Students also recreated a French dining experience as a part of their exam.

Some of the dishes students created included Croque Madame (baked ham and cheese sandwich with Béchamel sauce and topped with a fried egg), gâteau au yaourt (yogurt cake), crêpes filled with chocolate and strawberries, and macarons. Students were assisted by Teaching Kitchen Manager Cara Langston.

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School also partners with the Food Bank for community service, bringing Upper School students to serve weekly. The Teaching Kitchen is located at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia’s location in Clayton. The Teaching Kitchen hosts many community programs including hands-on cooking classes, chef demonstrations, farmer’s market activities, and charity dinners. Proceeds from classes and events support the Food Bank’s efforts to end hunger in Northeast Georgia. Learn more about the Teaching Kitchen here.
