Upper School students visit Vulcan Quarry

Environmental Sciences class visits local quarry and observe surface mining of granite.
Mr. Phillips' Environmental Sciences class visited the Vulcan Materials quarry on February 22, located just minutes away from our main campus. At the site, students observed the surface mining of granite and also saw how it is transported and crushed -about 6,000 tons a day- into varying sizes of usable stone. Large amounts of water are then used to clean the stone products.

The class gave special attention to the quarry's system of retaining ponds that cause sediments to settle out of the water, minimizing the impact on the environment and enabling the water to be reused in the industrial processes.
The students continue to expand their knowledge about the balancing of industrial activities with various approaches for maintaining the health of the environment.
