Biome Museum wows Rabun Gap community

The Class of 2024 showed off their knowledge in the annual event.
Mr. BySura's science classroom was transformed into several different biomes for the annual Creative Discovery Museum on Friday, February 9.

Rabun Gap sixth-graders have been working on this capstone project for several weeks, showcasing the knowledge they've learned about the world's climates, habitats, and cultures. Students created mini-biome exhibits in glass containers, and each student gave presentations to visitors about their biomes. Biomes included tundra, deep sea, African sahara, and Great Lakes, among others. The multi-disciplinary project taught skills in science, research, writing, and presenting. Faculty, parents, and students from all three divisions toured the museum throughout the day.

Special guest Dr. Kyle Barrett, Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University, gave a presentation later that day covering the effects and causes of climate change. Dr. Barrett also talked to Middle and Upper School students about the effects of urbanization on watersheds. Dr. Barrett's research focuses on the response of species to large-scale stressors such as climate change, invasive species, and land use change. Dr. Barrett is interested in linking research to conservation and management decisions, so he frequently works with federal and state agencies.
