Junior, Rebeca Ley is an integral part of the Rabun Gap girls tennis team.  Rebeca is a boarding student from Monterrey, Mexico and it is her second year at Rabun Gap.  In addition to playing tennis, she also enjoys the cirque program.

How long have you been playing tennis? Are there other teams that you play for?

I have been playing tennis since I was 7 years old. I also play for Club Colinas back in my hometown Monterrey, Mexico.

Do you play doubles and singles?

Yes, I play both doubles and singles.

What inspired you to play tennis?

Since I have memory, my father had taught me and my brother, Hazel Ley '20, to love sports. As I grew up, I developed a love for tennis as I used to see my father’s passion for tennis.

What is the best part about playing for the Eagles tennis team?

The best part of playing for the Eagles tennis team is definitely the girls that form part of the team. They make me feel at home, they are more like sisters to me. They have been there for me in the victories and losses.

What has been the most exciting game so far for you?

The first doubles match I had this season. It was a tough game and we lost in the tie breaker. However we were happy because we gave our everything on that court that day.
What led you to come play tennis at Rabun Gap?

My brother use to tell me how exciting and fun was to play a sport for Rabun Gap. I wanted to experienced it too.

What is the hardest part of being a student-athlete? How has the environment and people here at Rabun Gap helped you?

The hardest part of being a student-athlete is having to balance school and sport.  It is difficult to come back from a match exhausted and the next day have an Algebra exam I need to study for.

What makes playing at Rabun Gap special to you?

Playing for Rabun Gap has been such an special experience for me because I love representing my school and my friends.

What is your favorite thing about your coaches?

My favorite thing about Coach Karplus is that he is so dedicated to the team. He invests so much of his time and patience in us, not to mention he is like a parent for our team. My favorite thing about Coach Chaplin is that she has been there for me every time. She has been there for me in my losses and mental breakdowns. She has made me cake when I missed my family and reminded me that I'm not alone here at Rabun Gap.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to spend my free time resting in my dorm and watching "Keeping up with the Kardashians" with my roommate.

What's your favorite class and why?

My favorite class is girls weight lifting because I enjoy singing along Coach Stockel’s playlist.
What are your plans for after high school?
I don't have a clear idea of what I want to do yet. My first option is going back to college in Mexico and compete for my tennis team again.

What other school activities or organizations/other sports are you involved with?

Last year I was involved in the cirque program which I absolutely love. I couldn’t do it this year because it is in the same season as tennis. I'm looking forward to participating again in the cirque show my senior year.
