Meet the Coach: Jamey Ledford, wrestling

“Our goals are to produce as many state champions as possible and to always to be the best that we can,” said Ledford.

Head Eagles wrestling coach Jamey Ledford was instrumental in revitalizing the Rabun Gap wrestling program when he joined the faculty in 2013. He built the program from the ground up and has developed a highly successful track record for excellence in the wrestling program, with multiple home-grown athletes achieving multi-state success.

“I have enjoyed the bonds formed in the wrestling program as the program is being built,” said Ledford.

Coach Ledford started wrestling as a freshman in high school after one of the wrestling coaches took an interest in him and recruited him for the team. His coach promised to make him a state champion. He kept his promise and them some - Ledford finished his high school career placing in the top four at state three times, including a runner up finish his senior year, a sixth-place finish in nationals, and received several offers to wrestle in college.

Building the wrestling program has been an exciting challenge for Ledford. The program is unique because student-athletes have to be recruited internally. Typically, students coming into the school do not have previous wrestling experience, so it’s up to Coach Ledford and the other coaches to train them from the ground up.

Ledford is proud of the success the program has seen with multiple student-athletes finding success on a multi-state level. Ledford feels that the key ingredients to a successful Rabun Gap wrestler are toughness, coachability, and dedication.

“Our goals are to produce as many state champions as possible and to always to be the best that we can,” said Ledford.
