Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. He has accepted a unique opportunity to serve as the head of school at his alma mater, The Asheville School.

In the letter attached below to Rabun Gap’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Sgro reflects on his time at Rabun Gap stating, "It is a privilege to have been called to and entrusted with the care of this fine school...and I will be forever grateful for my time here and for your unflinching support."

Chair of the Board Margaret Fry Carton said: “Dr. Sgro has served Rabun Gap with outstanding vision, loyalty, and leadership, making our campus a national and global leader among independent schools.  Anthony and Faulkner are beloved members of the local community and built on the school’s historic mission to serve the local area. We are incredibly grateful for the seven years they have served and for the year ahead as together we ensure a smooth transition to new leadership”

Under Dr. Sgro’s leadership, Rabun Gap has expanded its program to include the Niles Bolton Middle School Complex and the Evelyne Sheats Lower School, enabling Rabun Gap to serve students from Pre-K through twelfth grade. This expansion honors the school’s historic roots and almost doubles the number of families Rabun Gap serves from the local region. Equally notable, Dr. Sgro has helped to ensure a fully enrolled Upper School with a thriving day and boarding population including students from 15 states and more than 45 countries. He also led the efforts to secure funding for and commence with the building of Rabun Gap’s new Community Dining Hall, which will open next year.

Dr. Sgro sees his last year of service to the school as a vitally important one.

“Faulkner and I look forward to working hard to make sure that this next year is a most productive one and that the transition to the next school leader is seamless,” Sgro said.

“Throughout 2018-2019, there will be opportunities for us to celebrate and honor the Sgro family for their service to Rabun Gap," Carton shares in the attached letter. “There is no more important responsibility for the Board of Trustees of any independent school than to recruit a new Head of School, and in the upcoming year this will be the primary focus of the Board. Our School is in a strong position to recruit from a global pool of experienced candidates...I will be recommending to the Board that we retain Carney, Sandoe, & Associates (CSA), to facilitate a comprehensive search for a new Head of School.  CSA is an executive search and consulting firm with over 30 years of experience with independent school searches, and they facilitated our last successful search that brought Anthony to our school. We will be naming our full Search Committee comprised of trustee and faculty representatives shortly. ”
